Adoni India
Adoni has undergone a number of substantial changes over the past few centuries. Emerging as a military base for the Vijayanagara Empire in the 15th century, the city has evolved to become a modern, manufacturing hub. The city gained its present seat as part of the state of Andra Pradesh in 1953, when the British further divided the country by language of origin. While the city constantly shifted its governmental structure, it emerged as a trade hub as a product of its impressive bounties of grain and gold, along with cloth and textile production. Adoni is a municipality and also a mandal headquarters and commercial town in Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh in India. It is around 140 miles from Hyderabad and 307 miles from Chennai by rail.
The population of Adoni was around 164,000 in 2005. The town, which was once a stronghold of the medieval Vijayanagar Kingdom, has presently substantial textile industries. The hill fort, which is presently in ruins, was once an important seat of government in Islamic times and is mentioned often in the wars of the 18th century.
In the 16th century, Adoni was under the rule of Yadavas. During that period, Adoni was known by the name, Yadavagiri. This changed to Adavani under the Islamic rule. Later on, it changed to Adoni. During the British rule, it was in Bellary district of Madras presidency. Adoni is also popularly known as the grain market in South India. It is even famous for its gold and cloth market and cotton trading too.
