Flora and Fauna of Lakshadweep
What meets the eye at first glance is the lush green colour that gracious tall palm trees paint. Undoubtedly, coconut is the only commercial crop. Gazers of the green pastures are Surgeonfishes. Of great many varieties of surgeons, the one commonly seen is the Powder Blue Sureonfish. They are called so because of a razor like spine they carry near the tail. A variety of crab, lobstres 7 shrimps inhabit the crevices of corals.
Lots of food fishes inhabit the coral atolls. The Mas-Choorai or Choorai, as people of Lakshadweep call Tuna, is their chicken of the sea & is mainly caught using poles & lines, with live bait to charm them. Playful Dolphins, Turtles, Rays & Flying fishes are occasionally seen by keen observers.
The flora in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep includes Banana, Colocasia, Drumstick, bread-fruit, jack fruit and wild almond. Coconut is the only crop of economic importance in Lakshadweep. These are found in different varieties such as Laccadive micro, Laccadive ordinary, green dwarf etc. Some of the shrub jungles and plants like Kanni, punna, chavok and Cheerani are unevenly grown throughout the islands. Two different varieties of sea grass are seen adjacent to the beaches. They are known as Thalassia hemprichin and Cymodocea isoetifolia. They prevent sea erosion and help accumulation of the beach sediments.
Flora In Lakshadweep
Lakshadweep is a completely different piece of land that holds in its heart, the treasures that are seldom seen. The flora in Lakshadweep is no exception itself. Lakshadweep is home to some of the uniquest plant varieties that add to the beauty of this archipelago. Banana, colocasia, Drumsticks, bread-fruit and jack fruit are some of the most common plant varieties in Lakshadweep. However coconut is the only item of economic importance to Lakshadweep peoples. Not only is it the main ingredient in the Lakshadweep cuisine, it is also used for making coirs which is then exported from here.
Fauna In Lakshadweep
Fauna in Lakshadweep consists mainly of marine life that is simply the most colorful you would have ever seen. When schools of fishes of various color swim over corals of different hues, the view is unbelievably intriguing. Skip jack, yellow fin, rainbow fish and King fish are the most commonly seen fishes in Lakshadweep lagoons. On land, cattle and poultry birds are the most commonly seen animals.
Lakshadweep is also home to a diversity of bird species. Bangaram is the main island where one can see the birds. Sand piper, golden plover, green shanks and red shanks are few of the most frequently found Avi fauna species on Bangaram island.
