This place was under the rule of Reddy, Ganapathi, Kushan, Vijayanagara and Nizam Kings. This district was formed in the year 1953.

About Khammam
Originally known as Kambadri, the name Khammam is derived from the name of a temple called Narsimhadri which was later renamed to Stamba Sikhari. The rock situated under the temple was known as Kamba. The name Khammam is belived to have been named after this temple.
