Goa festivals - Shigmotsav or Shigmo in Goa is one of the most celebrated festivals. Shigmo or say Shigmotsav in Goa is nothing but Holi celebration. It is a festival which bids good bye to winter and invites spring. Shigmotsav or Shigmo in Goa marks the presence of color, songs and dances. The Goa Shigmotsav or Shigmo is celebrated in March, around the time of the Carnival. However there are two forms of Shigmotsav in Goa.
One form is Dhakto Shigmo or small Shigmo celebrated by the cultivators, the labor class and the rural population and the other is the Vodlo Shigma or big Shigmo celebrated jointly by all the classes.
Dhakto Shigmo or small Shigmo begins five days prior to the first full-moon day in the month of Phalgun and ends on the full-moon day. It is celebrated mainly in the New Conquests areas of Goa. These songs are known as the Naman and the Jot. Dancers go door to door with with Dol and Tasha or drums. People give money to those dancers who come at their door steps. After their contributions, a song is sung for the donor.
The end of the celebration of Goa Shigmotsav or Shigmo comes with a ceremonial bath.
During Shigmotsav or Shigmo, a parade dance is performed by the traditional folk dancers who are joined by the street dancers. The dancers carry hand-crafted floats that have mythological and religious
significance. The Vodlo Shigmo or the ‘big Shigmo' is jointly celebrated and everybody participates in the festivities irrespective of class. Vodlo Shigmo begins with Holi Purnima and extends to five days.

The Shimgmotsav bids farewell to winter and is celebrated on the full moon day in the Phalguna month(March), the last month of the Hindu Calendar.
Description of Shigmotsav Festival in Goa
In Goa, the festival of Shigmotsav starts with ‘Naman’, when the villagers offer a complete obeisance from the 9th moon day to the full moon day and abstain from any kind of non vegetarian food or intoxicants.
It is from the 11th to the 15th moon day when the villagers dress themselves in colorful clothes and celebrate the different hues of spring by displaying multi colored cloths, torans, flags and red ‘Dwajas’.
They beat their drums and play the flutes to add music to the whole colorful ambience. The 5th day is the ‘Rang-Panchami’ when everyone celebrates with ‘Gulal’ or red colored powder and throw the color at it each other to greet the coming of spring.
The festivities associated with Shigmotsav Goan Festivals or Shigmo include the singing of the ritualistic choral songs and dances that are performed amidst the village gathering. The dance is accompanied by two types of songs, the Naman and the Jot.
Dol and drums feature prominently in the performances. Shigmotsav Goan Festivals or Shigmo is wrapped up with a collective bath.
